This is a large volcanic cone with a diameter of about120 km and is not only the highest mountain in Kenya but is as well as the second highest in Africa following Kilimanjaro.
Mt Kenya developed as a result of volcanic eruption in the period of the Great Rift Valley. The peaks of Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5188m) are the left overs of a vast volcanic plug that has gradually eroded to make the distinguishing silhouette. The peaks on Mt. Kenya are always iced with snow and glaciers.
Ludwig Krapf, a Swiss missionary was the earliest European to spot out on Mount Kenya in 1849. In 1899, Halford Mac Kinder and two Alpine guides participated in the first victorious climb of the mountain and named the two highest peaks following the Maasai leaders.
Mt Kenya activities are participated in by several trekkers from every where in the world as it is also an International Biosphere Reserve. Take pleasure in the hike!
There are three main routes up to the peaks area and these include the Sirmon, Chogoria and Naro Moru routes.

6 DAY MT. KENYA TREK – SIRIMON ROUTE
DAY 1: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – Nairobi
when you reach Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be welcomed by our representative of Trek East Africa prior to heading to Nairobi. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Nairobi – Old Moses Hut (3300m)
Begin off from Nairobi at 08.00 am for Mountain Rock Lodge. Reach in time for lunch prior to continuing to Sirimon Park gate. Begin the hike all the way through bamboo, mountain forest and rosewood up to the Old Moses Hut, attaining an elevation range of 700m within 3-4 hours. Dinner and overnight stay at Old Moses Hut.

Day 3: Old Moses Hut – Shipton’s Hut (4200m)
wake up early in the morning and continue traversing the open moorlands carpeted with tussock grass and punctuated with exclusive Giant lobelia and Senecio plants. This days trek is a bit long and quite exhausting as it heads especially via the Mackinder Valley that has nice appearance of the major peaks. Break in your journey for a short time for picnic lunch prior to continuing to Shipton’s hut gaining an elevation of 900m. Dinner and overnight stay.
Total walking time is about 6 – 7 hours.

Day 4: Shipton’s – Lenana (4985m) – Shipton’s Hut
trying out the top hill hike begins at 0300am, and occasionary takes 3-4 hours to arrive at point Lenana 4985m (Hikers summit). Move back to Shipton camp for breakfast.
During the remaining part of the day, you will have leisure (taking it easy). Dinner and Overnight stay at Shipton’s Hut

Day 5: Shipton’s Hut – Sirimon Road – Nairobi
