Situated 32 km away from the town of Arusha, Arusha National Park occupies an area of about137 square kilometers. It is found between the peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru.
The vegetation and wildlife change with the landscape which varies from forest to swamp.
the area has are three primary areas of significance in Arusha National Park and these comprise of the rugged Mt. Meru, Ngurdoto Volcano Crater and the Momela Lakes.
The Mt. Meru Crater provides part of the best dramatic landscapes in Africa and is taken to be the best part of any tour to Arusha National Park. Mt. Meru is a fascinating mixture of flourishing forests and exposed rocks. The forest has a number of birds plus more animals, fore example the gorgeous bushbuck easily spotted in the glades between the olden cedar trees.
The varying geology of the region is seen in the wonderful view of the ash cone and cliff face taking you to the top. The cliff stands up to beyond 4,500 feet and is part of the tallest cliff faces in the world. The old ash-flows drop down just before the crater floor making a spectacular and fantastic effect. On clear days superb views of Mt. Kilimanjaro can be spotted from nearly any spot of the park.
Ngurdoto Crater: This crater is bounded by highland forest, a major setting to mark black and white Colobus monkeys moving down from the treetops. Shore to shore, the crater increases 3 kilometers and moves down into a volcanic basin crowded with wildlife. The scenery from the shore is amazing, where warthogs and buffalo are occassionary seen on the crater’s swampy floor.
The Momela Lakes route is a connection of magnificent crater lakes. These lakes, like some in the 20 million-year-old Rift Valley, are not only alkaline but are as well shallow and fed mostly by underground streams. Elephants, Giraffes and hippos are principally seen to this area.
This site is also a birder’s ecstasy, occupying an amazing number of migratory and inhabitant bird life. beyond 400 species of birds have been registered in the park part of these are the flamingo, Peregrine Falcon, Crowned Eagle, Silvery-Cheeked Hornbill, Hammerhead stork and the Egyptian Vulture.
