The Mahale Mountains is at times called the Nkungwe named as following the parks largest mountain is situated in western Tanzania neighboring Lake Tanganyika.
In the same way like its northerly neighbor Gombe stream, this park is habitat to part of Africa’s left over wild chimpanzees. The number of these chimpanzees is assumed to be 1,000 with every chimpanzee named, its family ties recognized, and its individual activities studied. Tourisits can approach them within a few feet as they feed, groom and wrestle across the forest floor.
While the chimpanzee is the main target, the slopes hold up a number of forest fauna including vervet monkeys, blue and red tailed monkeys, red Colobus, yellow baboons, bush babies, blue duiker, hyrax, civet, and an array of bird species.
Getting there:
This Park is unreachable by road. The best alternative is to board a weekly steamer from Kigoma seven hours afterwards hire a local fishing boat for an additional one or two hours. On the other hand you can charter a flight from Kigoma, Arusha or Dar then take on a motor boat from Kigoma to Mahale
