Rwenzori Mountains were affirmed a Forest Reserve in 1941. This forest reserve was acknowledged as the biggest catchment area where several streams originate and supply water to the areas around in addition to maintaining the pressure of water to lakes Edward, George and Albert. Rwenzori Forest reserve was conserved as a national park in 1991 and announced a world heritage place in 1995. The Rwenzori Mountains have a range occupying an area of 996 sq kms, usually known as the legendary “Mountains of the Moon” because of its mist-shrouded, snow-capped peaks that stretch out 4° north of the Equator.
The mountain range is made up of six peaks that stretch from Mt. Stanley with Alexandria and Margherita (Africa’s third highest Mountain at 5109 meters), Mt. Speke – Vittorio Emmanuele (4889m), Mt. Baker (4843m), Mt. Gessi (4797m), Mt. Emin (4791m) and Mt. Luigi de Savoia 4626). Mt. Rwenzori is famous for its unengineered, steep – slippery trails and constant rain. High altitude, rain, cold temperatures, mud, bogs and steep terrain turn it to be the most taxing in Africa. All the same it is an exceptional target for eager hikers and climbers. The best moment of the year for hiking is in the dry seasons from July – August and December – February. On the other hand, it is still probable to trek in other left out months.
The fauna of this park is convincingly famous with a checklist of 70 mammal species and 182 birds. The Rwenzori Colobus Monkeys (Colobus angolensis), L’Hoesti’s Monkey (Cercopithecus l’hoesti), Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), Blue Monkey (Cercopithecus mitis), Rock Hyrax (Procavia syriacus), Red Forest – Black fronted Duikers (Cephalophus nigrifrons), Elephant (loxodanta Africana), Leopard (Panthera pardus) and the three horned chameleon (Chameleo johstonii) that make up part of the wildlife that can be viewed.
Access:
By Road: start your journey from Kampala passed Fort portal to Kasese or from Kampala via Fort Portal to Kasese. Nyakalengija the park headquarters of Rwenzori Mountains National park is 25 km from Kasese town.
By Air: Chartered planes are available for your journey to Kasese Airstrip from Entebbe and afterwards contunue by road to Nyakalengija.
Accommodation:
There are a various types of hotels, lodges, guest houses and camping sites in Kasese on the other hand; huts and rock shelters are existing on the mountains for climbers. Some hotels include: Margherita Hotel and Rwenzori International Hotel.
